Overview
Immigrants students face many challenges learning English, from limited resources to feeling isolated in class. To tackle this, I designed Spot, an AI app that provides real-time language translation and conversational dialogue systems to support students on their English learning journey.
01. Who is Spot?
Main features and tools
Real Time Translate
Spot combines machine translation and natural language processing technology to recognize and interpret different languages, delivering high-quality translations.
AI- Conversations Tool
With custom-built natural language processing and machine learning, users can talk directly with Spot. Spot can also adjust its language level to match the user’s proficiency, simplifying questions or statements as needed for clearer understanding.
Progress Tracker
To keep users motivated to keep using the applications, there will be built in progress trackers that users are view how much they have progressed.
02. Research
How did we get to this problem?
Challenge
How might we use artificial intelligence to create an accessible tool tailored to immigrant students learning English, helping them feel more connected in the classroom while supporting language adaptation and cultural integration?
Approach
Initial research into the specific social and language barriers immigrant students face in the classroom informed the development of a user journey flow and sitemap to address these challenges. This research provided targeted insights into features that could foster language learning, encourage social integration, and ease cultural adaptation within the application.
Competitive Audit
Landscape research focused on a diverse range of AI and language translation applications to understand which tools could best support immigrant students in learning English. This exploration helped identify specific features—such as real-time translation, language proficiency tracking, and personalized language practice—that would effectively aid students in overcoming language barriers.
03. Branding & Visual Identity
How did I design an AI language tool that felt appropriate for the context?
Design System
The typography and color palette of the visual branding were crafted to create a friendly and approachable feel without appearing intimidating or overly childish. Additionally, the selected typefaces prioritize clarity and legibility, ensuring that all viewers, including those with varying reading abilities and language skills, can easily access and understand the content.
Expressions
To enhance the personality of the AI that users interact with, a variety of expressions and emotional cues were developed. These expressions allow the AI to convey empathy and understanding during conversations, creating a more relatable and human-like experience.
04. Interface Design
What are the main experiences when engaging with Spot?
The Experience
The goal of the experience was to create a simple and intuitive user experience within the application, allowing users to navigate seamlessly and access essential tools immediately.
